Arthur Berkhoff - Hartshorn Engines (tape, L'Agence Des Refuses, 1983)

Another fine tape by Arthur Berkhoff, see previous posts for more information. This is another fine tape of voice and electronics. The first piece was also on Korm Plastics' 'Katacombe Vol.3'. I am not sure if I indexed it right, though, especially the b-side was pretty difficult.

Arthur Berkhoff & Robot Orguna - Pregroperativistic Atack (tape, ABP/PM, 1984)

When Deli Plain posted some music by Arthur Berkhoff I realized I have some too, which is this tape. Here he uses some computerized voices and sounds along with rhythm. Mechanical and a bit noisy but quite nice. I think the best piece I heard from him was Schrei Records' compilation 'Katacombe Vol. 3'. Must post that soon too.

Trax - Neoist Ghosts (tape, Trax 1085, 1985)

From Deli Plain

To answer L'étranger's question about "Basis Orguna / AKAUCN": No, that tape is not the same as "TRAX 1085 Neoists Ghosts". The proof is in the pudding, or rather: in this posting. "TRAX 1085 Neoists Ghosts" was edited and published by the Italian mail artist and underground musicia Vittore Baroni in 1985, two years after his tape Area
Condizionata 3: Videogames For The Blind
. It was the final "post-mortem" release of his legendary TRAX label, made in a period when he actively participated in Neoism (and ten years before having his hands in the similar-minded Luther Blissett project).

The "SMILE side" of the cassette consists of a sound collage based on Vittore's field recordings from the 9th Neoist Festival in the Northern Italian village of Ponte Nossa. It features the voices and sound material of Pete Horobin, Istvan Kantor, Glassmadness, Rod Summers, Graf Haufen & Hapunkt Fix, Ginny Lloyd, Andy Stenhouse, Robin Crozier, Al Ackerman, Emilio Morandi, tENTATIVELY, G. Achille Cavellini, David Zack, Arthur Berkhoff, Gerald Jupitter Larsen, Stewart Home, Mark Bloch, Basic
Essentials, Gordon W. & Dave Porter, Black Hand Gang, Chico Louis, Niels Lomholt, Tristan Renaud, Boris Wanowitch, First Aid Brigade & the people of Ponte Nossa.

The "SNARL side" contains five tracks by Déficit des Annees Anterieures (DDAA), Die Form, Roberto Marinelli, Zone Verte, Daniele Ciullini & Vivenza in a nonstop mix.

The download file includes Vittore's liner notes to the cassette, his obituary for the TRAX project, and selections from his SMILE/SNARL magazine published in the same year. And, in order to either avoid or perfect the confusion, "Trax 1085 Neoist Ghosts" is not identical to Hapunkt Fix's "The Sound of Neoism", another field recording sound
collage from the same festival based on partly the same audio material.

Basis Orguna / AKAUCN (Akademgorod United Cells of Neoism,

Probably there are some people out there who want to extent the life of this blog a little longer, and who offered me some more music. Although not all are accepted, I'm happy to announce today the first contribution of deli plain, who has a great interest in Neoism, mail-art and cassette tapes. Here is his first contribution:

"Pregroperativism" was the one-man-movement of the Dutch mail artist Arthur Berkhoff, a person who was both an avid networker and one-of-a-kind. Based in Amsterdam and later Almelo, he was highly productive in the 1980s and early 1990s, he contributed to many underground tape and mail art projects mostly with work that developed his highly individual mythology of Pregroperativism in visual and sound collages. In the mid-1980s, he became a member of Neoism, an international subcultural -ism whose members collectively operated under the name Monty Cantsin (and included other prominent cassette underground artists such as Vittore Baroni and Graf Haufen).

Ripority folio 8, released in October 1986, is the eighth issue of a series of a spoken word and noise cut-ups produced in the typical 1980s underground cassette culture mode of mail exchange and rework of text, sound and image material. Its subject, of course, is Pregroperativism and Neoism, featuring the voice of Arthur Berkoff himself and his correspondents R.U. Sevol, Graf Haufen, Rod Summers, David Zack, John Bennett, Vittore Baroni, Pete Horobin, John Berndt, Sissokou Mamadou, Büro für künstlerische Umtriebe auf dem Land, Stewart Home, A1.Waste Paper Co. Ltd., Mark Pawson, John Atkin, Michael Voodoo, Nunzio James Cobb 6 Finger Club, David Cole, Les Cammer, Al Ackerman, Jack Saunders, Dazar Omahaha, Emilio Morandi, tENTATIVELY a cONVENIENCE.
