Far From The (H)Eard (tape, Exart Tapes 011, 1984)

More from Hessel Veldman, this is another low on information release. The music is played by Kees Beukelaar, Herman te Loo and Hessel Veldman. I think all three were also a member of Gorgonzola Legs. Less experimental, more electronic, and even a bit poppy at times.

Harsh Ears Now (three tapes, Midas Music T01, 19??)

Originally Midas Tapes (the fore runner of Midas Music) released five volumes of Harsh Ears Now compilation series, in different lengths but when Jac van Bussel re-started as Midas Music he did a re-issue of three ninety minute cassettes. Lots of people from the Midas Music area, solo projects of THU20 members and they have sometimes more than one track. Lots of noise, experimental and electronic music.

Kapotte Muziek, THU20, Dwarf Farm, Club Rialto, Happy Halloween, Vital Parts, Jacinthebox, Tools You Can Trust, Dwarf Farm, Post Destruction Music, Une Le Wurg Production, Arvid Tuba, S·Core, Tecdor Menta, Weird Scenes, Marcel van der Zwet, Vik Pawel, Post Destruction Music & Dva Met Dva Nichts, The Haters, Mailcop, Zweiter Korps, Victor/Im, Mystery Hearsay, Urbain Autopsy, Dva Met Dva Nichts, Odal, Danton's Voice, Enhänta Bödlar, Sarkuidosis Sida, IOSS, Winter, New Carrollton.

The Black Box (3 tapes, Exart tapes ea 015, 016, 017, 1986?)

Packed in a black box, three tapes with black covers and a booklet with collages, this is one of those true mysteries of this blog. Nowhere it is mentioned who plays the music, but I think its safe to say it is made by Hessel Veldman, who ran the Exart label, and plays on many of the releases. Lengthy synth pieces, quite dark and ambient, and sometimes with a rhythm.

THU20 - Live At Bukbuk, Parkzicht, V2 & Eucalypta (tape, Midas Music T03, 199?)

Easily one of my favorite bands from The Netherlands. THU20 started in 1986 with Jac van Bussel, Ios Smolders, Roel Meelkop, Guido Doesborg and Peter Duimelinks. In the early days free form electronic music with lots of tapes and synths, but quite early on they started to compose music on multitrack, which lead to 'Eerste Uni', their masterwork of the late 80s, and one of the first independent CDs of that kind in The Netherlands. Guido left and the band sort get together when necessary, which can mean years of absence. Their concerts are improvisations of electro-acoustic objects, computers and analogue synths. Frans de Waard of Kapotte Muziek is now officially regarded the new fifth member. This tape has selection of early live concerts and is in fact a best of two earlier live tapes, also on Midas Music. Originally released in an edition of 100 copies.

Hometapers Nijmegen (tape, Element Tapes et 01, 198?)

Call me old, but sometimes I am surprised to see posts from me on other blogs. I have nothing against that, but it would be nice to point the source where you go it from, and thus make some ad for nice other blogs. When I left a comment somewhere about this, somebody thought I was claiming copyright, for 'things that also got without paying respect to copyright' or something along those lines. That's not the case. But unlike many others my presence on the internet is not because I want to be, but because I think I have something interesting to share. Once I have nothing share I will stop. That's the main difference between me and some other bloggers (or rather me and the rest of the internet world; I am neither part of any social networking - if I want a social network I go to the pub). Another objection against using stuff from other blogs, is that its almost the same as taking something of Soulseek and blogging it. You never know if you got the real thing, in its complete form and that's simply I am very much interested about (and not because I upload info on Discogs, because I don't, but rather because I know some people who do use downloads to do that and would you want your Discogs with mistakes?). That's why I and my fellow bloggers whom I know personally and trust, only post things we have and that in itself is no guarantee its complete, but its not lifted from some other blog or soulseek. So next to my computer is an obscure compilation tape from Nijmegen, The Netherlands with electro, minimal synth and poppy ambient. I never heard of any of these people, even though I'm from the same, not so big city. Paul Spannenberg, Peter Hoeke, Rob/Bernard, Jos/Inuit, two Guys, Phil Castio and Enrico Fiasco. Its released by Element Tapes, of whom I never heard again.

The Berlin Wall - Where's The Limit?.....Of Gewoon Het Einde (tape, Midas Tapes taped 001, 1983)

Before Midas Music there was Midas Tapes and before that there was A Tapes, all run by Jac van Bussel (DMDN). The Berlin Wall was a band he was in, along with Petra van Bommel (Voice), Bart Cuppens (Guitar) Jurgen Jeninga (Drums) and Jac on Bass & Voice. On A Tapes there was a released called 'Heesters & Thuyes', but I don't have it. This tape, the first one when Jac switched names to Midas Tapes, contains the last recordings by the band, who hailed from Asten, The Netherlands, including their final concert (next week exactly twenty-six years ago in fact). A bit punk like, but charming naive with small interviews (in Dutch) in between.

Enkele Gemotiveerde Produktiemedewerkers (tape, Midas Music T09, 1990)

It turns out that one fan of this blog is DMDN, who runs an excellent record shop in Tilburg called Antenne Records. He sells lost of dance music, but online also many experimental stuff. DMDN used to run A Tapes in the very early 80s and then Midas Tapes, turning Midas Music later on. Also he had a label called Supreme Tool Supplies. DMDN played as Death Pact, is still a member of THU20, also nowadays a member of probably the oddest metal band Bunkur and once of Lewd. And a great DJ. Does he ever sleep we wonder? He donated a whole bunch of Mp3s from his label(s) for this blog and to celebrate that great event we start with a likewise great compilation 'Enkele Gemotiveerde Produktiemedewerkers' (some motivited production workers). It includes Smersh, Dva Met Dva Nichts, Mailcop, Lieutenant Caramel, Achim Wollscheid, Arcane Device, Hands To, THU20, Dva Met Dva Nichts & Post Destruction Music, Null, Dwarf Farm, Merzbow, Arcane Device, IOSS, Winter, Kapotte Muziek, Gregory Whitehead, Dva Met Dva Nichts & Emil Beaulieau, Mission Papua Holland, Yeast Culture.

Richard Youngs - Four 7inches

Today four 7" records which all involve Richard Youngs. First there is one split with Zene and A Band. Both sides also include Simon Wickham Smith. That one is released by Baby Heuy. I don't know anything about Zene. With A Band, Youngs produced some more music, I believe. The other 7" is just Youngs, but also teaming up with another band. Leather Mole, also of whom I never heard.
The other two are collaboration between Wickham-smith and Youngs. 'The Enigma Of Rotons' is a lathe cut record and probably highly limited (approx 50 were made). 'Worried About Heaven' was released by Fourth Dimension Records.

The exact details:

Richard Youngs & Leather Mole (Crank Automotive c4) (1995)
Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs/A Band: Zene/Salivating Regina (Baby Huey 007) (1992)
Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs: Worried About Heaven/Muscles in Your Head (Fourth Dimension FDS36) (1994)
Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs: The Enigma of Rotons (Hells Half Halo) (1998)

The Scarecrow - De Wondere Wereld van Chriet Titulaer (tape, Golden Mercy Records gm 004, 198?)

donated by Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac

donated by Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac
This is the fourth Golden Mercy production. It is right that the catalogue numbering of this label was very messy but the first cassette was a compilation tape called 'BIOMUTANTEN' -it will be posted on this blog later. Maybe that was number zero, who knows. Anyway this little gem is some kind of a classic. Under all the tape hiss & distortion and dropouts (some of it because it is an old tape, but also because it was made 'Sound-On-Sound' -doing the overdubs on one track while the whole mix is on the other- on an old reel-to-reel two track Sony machine,) there are some very enjoyable songs here, all played and composed (except for the two covers) by one man, 'Skerkrau' for friends. This tape was the biggest seller that had hit Golden Mercy Records so far, meaning they must have sold at least 100 copies of it, maybe even more... As far as i know, this was the only solo 'records' Skerkrau ever made, later on he played in two bands; 'early' Dull Schicksal and 'late' Black Sheep. And for those who are not dutch; more references to that enigmatic Chriet Titulaer here. He was famous because of his peculiar beard and because he was THE outer space specialist in the Netherlands.

Jongerenkrant Zuid (tape, Combinator Records, 1983)

donated by Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac:
This was almost a 'commercial' job for the two guys, José and Kees, that ran Combinator Records. They were located in Rotterdam's biggest squat, The Poortgebouw (still fighting for it's existence nowadays). Personally, i go more for their self-produced music -see Ex Arare Musica and Par Accidante, somewhere else on this blog. On those cassettes they acted like low-budget Kip Hanrahans; dragging anybody for the microphone who could play something and then putting it in the context they had allready chosen. They were doing electronics; analog synths of course- but couldn't play or sing something themselves as far as i remember. Anyway, 'Jongerenkrant Zuid' hired them to release this cassette which was also their last issue (of Jongerenkrant Zuid i mean) . It contains live-recordings of a festival that same Jongerenkrant oganised in 1983 in Rotterdam. The recordings are quite well done. For historical accuracy i also included all the little text pieces in between -on separate tracks. Bands included are Lavvi Ebbel, The Frog, Spot The Looney, The Div and Nasmak.

Yximalloo & De Fabriek - Music For Kretek (tape, De Fabriek Records & Tapes, 19??)

As promised some weeks ago when I posted two tapes by Yximalloo, here's another one of that weirdness, this time together with De Fabriek. It lists on the cover Louise Nanuru, Shigeo Ootake, Osamu Sasagawa, Richard van Dellen and Naofumi Ishimaru as the players and it was recorded in Japan, Holland and Indonesia - hence the title (Kretek being Indonesian cigarettes).

Kapotte Muziek & Telepherique (tape, Drahtfunk Products, 1992)

A collaboration between the Dutch project Kapotte Muziek and the German Telepherique. They gave eachother raw sound material to work with, based on radio and shortwave sounds. Telepherique does a pretty noisy job, whereas Kapotte Muziek is more ambient/industrial. I think the Kapotte Muziek piece (which is in five unseparated parts) was also released on the CD 'Verder', but it might be a slightly different version.

Jaap De Groot Speelt De Melkboerenhondesonate (tape, Golden Mercy gm 002, 1983)

donated by Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac

The third Golden Mercy release. This is basically the same story as the other two, except for the slightly changing line-up and the fact that the party had moved to the huge practise room in the attic where all of the MELKBOERENHONDESONATE was recorded. Other bands were practising there too, as Theo, our guitar player who lived downstairs, didn't seem to mind all the noise above his head. One of my fondest memories of those days; Cor Kotx (singer of Rotterdam noisepunk band KOTX, now deceased) pissing in OUR gutter on the roof. (well, 'fondest' is maybe slightly exaggerated -it just felt like we were part of 'the scene' as well. A scene that didn't exist as we found out later. Rotterdam was & is a collection of little people doing their little things in their tiny little houses, minding thier own business). well. 'Jaap De Groot Speelt' proves that we were developing in a band direction, a fact that would be celebrated by starting the band 'Dull Schicksal' not much later.
Crew on this k7; Theo Olsthoorn, Sander Jansweert, Evert van Atten, Luuk Simonis, saskia Leenes

note from 433rpm: Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac says this is the third, while 'De Nederlandse Cassette Catalogus' calls this gm 002. nothing on the cover.

Chriet Titulaer & De Kunstmanen - Moeite With Relations (tape, Golden Mercy gm 001, 1983)

I am pleased to announce another new donator of excellent underground tapes, Pascal 'titi' Tabarnac, who I trust to create an excellent addition to this blog of truly delights of music.

Moeite With Relations by Chriet Titulaer & De Kunstmanen was the second GOLDEN MERCY release. It was made and recorded by a group of friends in the big livingroom of the squat they lived in. (Rotterdam, 1983, Crooswijk) Some of the stuff was recorded in the Poortgebouw by the people from Combinator Records, Kees & José. Also, the silly interview at the end of the tape is José ('deze cassette bezit andere kwaliteiten die niet zo onmiddelijk zijn af te meten in luistergenot') 'interviewing' Luuk Simonis. His reference to the magazine Vinyl was not a subconcious one; any cassette that was released was reviewed -or rather mentioned- by Oscar Smit, the man in charge of the cassette department.
As for as i remember this was the crew that made it; Theo Olsthoorn, Sander Jansweert, Eric & Yono, Kees & José, Stef ('steph'), Luuk Simonis, Sira & Jean Marc(?) en Eddie Bergshoef.
The sleeve was printed on an old printing machine (hand-composed) , owned by the small art collective 'het Rotterdams Kunstgesticht' Simonis was working with.
'Moeite With Relations' is a bit of a snapshot of the world we inhabited in those days; being on the dole, smoking dope, trying to make music or do anything else artistical, drinking endless cups of tea and trying our hand on this strange version of obscure 'cabaret', lots of toy-piano and badly played songs.

Quite a curious compilation this one, released by De Fabriek on some trip to Russia in 1985. Not really indexed, so its hard to say who does what here. On the cover the following names are mentioned: Gregori, Fagin, Suiatoslav-Lieontievich-Kruticov, Anatol-Zeliocowskij, Obeng & Sally Balfour, Toni, Richard, Andries. The latter two of course the hardcore of De Fabriek. Quite synth based and experimental.

Rotterdams Vivisectie Orkest - Instant Carcinoma (tape)

One day I got home, and somebody had dropped this in my mail box. Actually this post is number 700! This is what he wrote about this band:

Rotterdam Vivisectie Orkest was the project of Michaël van der Tak, a very private expert on the history of Nazi-Germany, the French Revolution, Wyndham Lewis, Celine, Emma Goldmann and more (even more private). The collaborating musicians went on to form a (typical end of eighties-style post-Birthday Party-style) rockband Spasmodique; vocalist/guitar-player Mark Ritsema used to mention his roots in the Vivisectie Orkest on his site, but for some reason not anymore. Nowadays he's part of Mecano (yes, the orig. one) and on touring regularly with John Sinclair, the former MC5 manager (for whom John Lennon campaigned, to get him out of jail—for smoking marihuana).
One can trace the Michaël's vocal stylings for a large part as compensation for his day-job at the energy company, where he was employed at the complaints desk. Still, one might feel, that Michaël sure does complain a lot—but that comes very natural with the (Rotterdam) territory. For sure, there will have been gigs at the time of the cassette's release, but surely they will have been pretty much limited to the Rotterdam Jazzbunker, at which rehearsal-space annex stage Michaël, alongside Hugo van Rooij (Carbolic Acid), Henk van Schaik (Debiele Eenheid), Rob van Schaik (Ret Marut), Yola (Ret Marut), Gerard Kranendonk & Lukas Simonis (Dull Schicksal) booked gigs and published poetry in the the joint's monthly programme-booklet Nigredo. Later on Michaël did a lot of hard core free improvising, in Blowjob (inc. JW of Bat Attack and Figurehead), even played in the band Na Und (which included Victor Snijtsheuvel, guitarplayer with Dull Schicksal) but mostly solo. Nowadays, his main activity is playing in Wijntak, a free-impro duo with Wijnand Lammers (drums).

Soviet Sex - Happy End (LP, Eksakt Records 002, 1982)

This band came from the infamous no wave scene in The Netherlands called Ultra, and consisted on Maarten van der Ploeg, Rogier van der Ploeg and Peter Klashorst, previously known as Interior. This album was released towards the end of their first incarnation. Later on the reformed with Ellen ten Damme, some singer or actress from The Netherlands. The two Ploeg brothers went on to play as Blue Murder and Peter Klashorst is still a famous painter. Maarten van der Ploeg died in 2004. This album is quite psychedelic sort of post punk.

I have no clue who De Aardappeleters are, well except for a well-known Van Gogh painting of course, as the covers don't clue at all. Two relatively short tapes. One is called 'Escape From Kroller Moller' (which in case you don't know is a museum in which they have some Van Gogh paintings) and the other is 'Split Person'. No indication for a label. From all stuff I borrowed from Pieter, this was perhaps the one I was most interested in. Other members are Jan (?) on vocals, flute, Jan on slides, Moniek on guitar, and Joost on bas, although the cover shows slightly different names, but I am quoting Boh magazine nr 3. This particular tape was a special copy to Pieter with extra tracks which aren't part of the release on GAB, the band's own label. Great post punk, doom music.
