Solid Space - Space Museum (tape, In Phaze Records, 1982)

Synth pop band who just had this one release. Musicians were: Dan, Matthew and Jon Winegum on one track. Cheerful and melancholy. Still a big favorite down here. In the Dutch magazine Vinyl this was reviewed saying it was nice but it'll be all forgotten about in five years. Yeah right. Still great.

yep it is a great tape, even after 25 years, so that magazine was entirely wrong!

critics generally have their heads up their asses. i could see how certain aspects of this music could be considered dated, but that's only if you were approaching it to be fashionable back then to begin with. if music is good, it doesn't have to be definitive or timeless, so a critic can go pound salt.

One of my most favourite tapes which I bought from seeing a review in 2000AD. Had to make copies to ensure the original never died.

You've saved me the trouble of ripping the tape to MP3 - now I can listen to the music at work. Christmas has come early!

I love the tracks - very mournful and dark. Hints of Cthulhu and other books I was reading back in the early 80s, for example.

I remember looking around a few years ago on the Internet there was nothing - now it's even on YouTube.

I was having dinner last night with my friend Matthew, who I have known for years. I told him I wrote a song called Smelter. Then he tells me he was in a band called Solid Space. I googled it, and found that a bunch of people are raving about his band!

has there been any side-projects?
hope so!

The band is looking into getting the original tapes from the album and re-releasing it on CD and on iTunes.

Watch for info.

Hi JAV, would you possibly be able to forward my email to the band? I'm working with a label in Italy and we're gagging to release this on vinyl. I actually have a mutual friend of solid space, someone who went to school with them, but he's lost contact with them too.

Thanks!!

I forwarded your email, but the band has not been receptive to similar requests.

OK, thanks for trying, there seems to be so many people that want to see this happen it would be shame for it not to. Cheers, Michael

Unfreakinbelievable, I was just salivating over this on Discogs when I thought what the hell and googled it only to discover someone had actually posted it!

My gods, everything is destined to appear in digital form no matter how old or how obscure!

Shame the band do not seem receptive to re-releasing their material, you would have thought that the very fact a new audience has emerged nearly thirty years after the fact should actually signal that you created something of worth.

Maybe one or two of the members have a box full of old tapes and they are selling them on Discogs one at a time for nearly £80 a pop!

I would just go ahead and release it, you have asked and done your best, what are they going to do, sue ya?!?! Copyright is for dinosaurs!
