Mission Papua Holland - Le Chevre d'Or (tape, 1984)

Mission Papua Holland is best known for their two LPs, 'Love You Baby' and 'June 87'. The band, from 's-Hertogenbosch The Netherlands, had a floating membership. Main member Mark van Gelder doesn't play on this cassette, Jasper Frenken does. Also other musicians are mentioned: Andre de Vries, Dirk van Veldhoven, Rene, Otto, Ed Kooiman. Recorded with simple equipment on several locations. Here its electronic music with a bit of rock instruments. More tapes them will follow.

Enkele Gemotiveerde Produktiemedewerkers (tape, Midas Music T09, 1990)

It turns out that one fan of this blog is DMDN, who runs an excellent record shop in Tilburg called Antenne Records. He sells lost of dance music, but online also many experimental stuff. DMDN used to run A Tapes in the very early 80s and then Midas Tapes, turning Midas Music later on. Also he had a label called Supreme Tool Supplies. DMDN played as Death Pact, is still a member of THU20, also nowadays a member of probably the oddest metal band Bunkur and once of Lewd. And a great DJ. Does he ever sleep we wonder? He donated a whole bunch of Mp3s from his label(s) for this blog and to celebrate that great event we start with a likewise great compilation 'Enkele Gemotiveerde Produktiemedewerkers' (some motivited production workers). Is That You Santa Claus (tape, Noel 3, 1986)

By my own counting this blog won't make it until christmas 2009. I post only stuff I ripped myself (not necessarily things I own, as you will soon experience, as I borrowed a bunch of great Dutch punk records) or by my trusted Dr. Freakowitz, and not stuff I found on Soulseek, simply because I don't seek soul. So I worked a bit in advance, having transferred most of my tapes and some more records, plus whatever I borrowed, I'd say we're done in 5 months. Maybe a bit more. But christmas? No. Ok, that means that on this boxing day, I have to do the final christmas tape by Oscar Smit from 1986, with Video Aventures, De Fabriek, Atrox & F.P. & The Doubling Riders, Mission Papua Holland, Edward Ka-spel, Betty Arden, Gen Ken, The Misz, Etienne Brunet & Jeanpierre Bedoyan and Granmaster O again. Thanks to Dr. Freakowitz.

Prilius Lacus - Three Tapes

This might be one of the most obscure names thus far on this blog. A four piece band from Den Bosch, The Netherlands. They had ties to V2 when they were located in that town. Prilius Lacus rehearsed there and made recordings in the studio that was owned by Mission Papua Holland, housed in the garage next to V2. They had a conventional line up, drums, bass, guitar, vocals and saxophone, but also used lots of metal percussion, tape machines an vacuum cleaners. Their first cassette, 'Symbol Und Hoffnung' is quite raw, NDW like, but more Todliche Doris and Neubauten like. It's not great, but their second release 'Dentro De La Gravidad' has a well-balanced sound, combining the rock elements with studio trickery, sound collages and such like. It makes them sound more like Nurse With Wound and I am quite surprised of the quality after all these years. Their third and final release is 'Pas De Fear' a ten minute tape release by Korm Plastics. This came in a plastic bag, with just the tape (no shell), and some extra inserts. The other two releases are packed horrible, in my humble opinion. Burned baby dolls glued to the first and hidious purfoam on the second. We should forget those package, and enjoy, especially 'Dentro'.

Mission Papua Holland - June 87 (LP, Mission Papua Holland Records, 1987)

The links for the five 'Contact Discs' (see last friday) are working! I think there was a problem on the side of Massmirror, but also for reasons unknown it's now solved.

A bit of a weird band, Mission Papua Holland. There were two members, Jasper Frenken and Mark van Gelder, who sometimes played together and sometimes solo, but always used the name Mission Papua Holland. It is in hindsight a bit hard to say who did what, but 'June 87' was made solo by Frenken. I hadn't played this in some years, and was surprised by its quality. One side is quite drone related, while the three shorter tracks are almost academic electronic. A true great record of no longer forgotten music.

Generated Progression (LP, Mission Papua Holland Records/Tapes 87003, 1987)

When Three Mad Dog, a band from 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, won a prize in a talent thing, they wanted to use the money to record a LP, but before recording started the band fell apart. Three Mad Dog was perhaps, in a way, the Dutch answer to Test Department. Bandleader Roderik Henderson went in the studio and recorded this LP in stead, in which he on one hand goes on with Three Mad Dog tribal rhythms and metal percussion, and on the other hand has dark soundscapes. An od mixture, but it works quite well. Generated Progression could be the Dutch answer to Werkbund and Test Dept. After that Henderson didn't play any music anymore and went back to his profession of being a visual artist and these days works as a photographer. The release is on Mission Papua Holland Records, who were from the same city and who released two LPs of their own (one I will post in the future, as the other one I don't have) and they ran a cheap studio, Studio AAwal, in the back garage of V2, who were then also located in this city.
