Dry Lungs One (LP, Placebo Records, 1985)

Paul Lemos of Controlled Bleeding compiled this album, and put his own band on the first side, first track. This album contains all the more well-known industrial music makers from the 80s, with half US acts and one half European, plus of course Merzbow. Also included are Etant Donnes, Neo Zelanda, Esplendor Geometrico, Toll, Vivenza, HNAS/Mieses Gegonge, Jarboe, P16.D4/SBOTHI, Maybe Mental, Le Syndicat, Sleep Chamber, John Duncan, P231/ANKH, Dog As Master and Problemist.

  1. I was kind of pissed off at Paul Lemos when this came out. Yes he did give opportunities for a bunch of previously unknown artists to appear on vinyl, but he gave himself a track at least twice as long as anyone else, and I thought that was unfairly self-indulgent. "Dry Lungs" was a good series, though. Of course... all out of print now.

  2. I'm really fan of Paul Lemos's music, he has been dedicated to the manipulation of sounds in a way that really surprise us. This compilation is welcome cuz' is very hard to find nowadays. Really thanks for posting!

  6. Thanks for this. I've owned two copies of this over the years and have always had a bit of trouble with the Controlled Bleeding track -- seems like it was mastered for stylus hopping. I'm also interested to see if you left the label scratch over the leadout on Side 2 (the label is so big that it covers the leadout lock groove, creating a conceptual track in itself).

  8. On the other hand, the long track "Taxi Music" on Cabaret Voltaire's soundtrack to "Johnny Yes No" (Doublevision, 1982) DID have an odd groove mastered into it like that, and ones' One True stylus would go hopping into space unless it was of a reasonable tracking weight.
Of course, the later CD reissue was inacapable of recreating that.
23 Skidoo's "The Culling is Coming" (Le Disques du Crepuscule) from about the same time had something funny in it too... a lock groove or something.

  9. I remember the first cassette of Dry Lungs I picked-up in 1986 from Bleecker Bob's. It was scary, nightmarish and compelling. Everytime a new comp would come out, I'd purchase it. I still have all four compilations on cassette. I have tried to find others that were exposed to the Dry Lungs comps and everyone would look at me as though I had a third eye. I'm happy to discover I wasn't the only individual exposed to the great music that is Dry Lungs. It was the first time I had heard of Controlled Bleeding and Phantom Toolbooth or the countless others on those recordings. I would like to thank Lemos and Placebo for compiling and releasing those albums. I still listen to them with awe to this day!
